2025 Masters Pool Strategy: Expert Tips to Guide Your Picks

Editor’s Note: This guest post is from PoolGenius, a provider of data-driven picks and tools that have helped pool players win at more than three times the expected rate.

The Masters tournament isn’t just the most prestigious golf event of the year—it’s also the highlight of golf pool season. Whether you’re competing against friends, family, or coworkers, having the right strategy can be the difference between finishing in the middle of the pack and taking home the prize.

Most Masters pools use a tier-based format where you select one golfer from each predetermined group. While many participants choose based on name recognition or recent form, winning requires a more calculated approach. Let’s break down the most effective strategies to help you gain an edge in your Masters pool this year.

The 5 Key Strategies to Win Your Masters Pool

Want to rise above the crowd in your Masters pool? Focus on these five proven strategies that separate casual entries from serious contenders.

1. Embrace High-Value, Smart Contrarian Picks

The most common mistake in Masters pools is playing it too safe. For most pools, if you finish in 25th place out of 100 entries, that’s essentially the same as finishing in last place—you don’t win anything either way.

To win your Masters pool, you need to stand out from the pack. That means embracing some risk—not for the sake of being contrarian, but to give yourself a real shot at finishing first.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about blindly chasing longshots. It’s about making calculated picks—identifying players with similar upside to the chalk picks but significantly lower projected ownership.

In 2025, the Masters field offers plenty of these value picks. Whether your pool uses tiers or is a free-for-all, certain names should be on your radar. Take Will Zalatoris, for example: he ranks third in strokes gained at Augusta in our rankings over the past four years, ahead of several players likely to be rostered 10–20% more often.

Smart picks like that are how you create separation—and put yourself in a position to win.

2. Focus on Finding Quality Players, Not Longshots

While differentiation is crucial, don’t sacrifice too much quality. The winning strategy is to identify strong golfers who are likely to be underpicked relative to their actual chances of success.

A practical way to approach this is by scanning each tier and identifying which golfers are projected to be the most popular—using betting odds, course history, and recent form as your guideposts. Once you’ve identified the likely chalk, evaluate the alternatives in that same tier. Are there golfers with similar win equity or betting odds who are flying under the radar?

Pivot Opportunity Example

Let’s say that Scottie Scheffler is in the first tier and he’s picked at a 40% rate across most pools. What happens if you pick a golfer with similar winning potential that is picked at only a 10% rate? If that golfer outperforms Scheffler, you’ve just vaulted past 40% of your pool with a single pick. That’s leverage—and it’s one of the most powerful tools for winning Masters pools.

Let’s break down two hypothetical Tier 1 choices:

  • Golfer A: 15% chance to win, selected by 45% of your pool
  • Golfer B: 12% chance to win, selected by 15% of your pool

Even though Golfer B has a slightly lower win probability, the edge in ownership creates a much stronger upside. If Golfer B outperforms Golfer A, you gain ground on nearly half your pool while only giving up 3% in win odds. In competitive pools, that’s a trade you should be willing to make.

And you can apply this concept across multiple tiers. Just remember: the number of leverage plays you need depends on your pool’s size and scoring structure—so be strategic.

The key to this strategy is knowing the public pick trends. This year, understanding public pick trends is critical. A few top-tier names may go overlooked despite strong win potential:

  • Xander Schauffele is quietly rounding back into form after dealing with an injury and a light tournament schedule. He remains near the top of the odds board, but with fewer recent starts, he could be flying under the radar in many pools.
  • Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann are both inside the top 10 in most sportsbooks, yet their visibility is lower due to playing on LIV. Many casual pool entrants may undervalue them simply because they haven’t seen them on the PGA Tour this season.
  • Other players like Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Cantlay, Corey Conners, and Shane Lowry could be overlooked as well, even though they bring strong course history or solid strokes-gained profiles into the week.

The key is identifying where you can get win equity at reduced ownership. These aren’t wild longshots—they’re legitimate contenders who may be underpicked due to perception, lack of name recognition, or recency bias.

If you can spot those gaps, that’s where you create real leverage—and real upside—in your pool.

3. Pick Based on Pool Size

Your strategy should adjust based on how many entries you’re competing against:

Small Pools (Under 50 entries):

  • You can take a more balanced approach
  • One or two differentiated picks are often enough
  • Focus on overall quality with subtle pivots from popular choices

Mid-Sized Pools (50-200 entries):

  • Increase your contrarian selections
  • Look for value in the middle tiers
  • Consider fading at least one “can’t-miss” popular pick

Large Pools (200+ entries):

  • Get aggressive with uniqueness
  • Create a lineup that mixes in strategic leverage picks
  • Be willing to make multiple against-the-grain selections

Playing it safe in large pools is actually the riskiest strategy because even if most of your picks hit, you will likely be blocked from climbing the leaderboard by someone who has a similar but slightly better combination.

4. Consider Your Pool’s Scoring System

Different Masters pools use various scoring systems, and your strategy should adapt accordingly:

Prize Money/Finishing Position:

  • Favor golfers with high ceilings and winning upside
  • Middle-of-the-pack finishes have minimal value
  • One top-5 finish is worth multiple top-25s

Stroke-Based Scoring:

  • Consistency matters more
  • Missed cuts are extremely damaging
  • Look for high-floor players, especially in middle tiers

“Drop Your Worst” Formats:

  • Take more calculated risks
  • Missed cuts hurt less if you can drop your worst scores
  • High-upside plays become more valuable

Understanding your specific format allows you to focus on the right metrics when making selections.

5. Leverage Betting Odds and Data (Not Emotions)

Too many pool participants make selections based on past Masters performances, name recognition, or emotional connections to certain players. The data shows this is a losing approach.

Instead:

  • Use current betting odds as your primary guide
  • Compare actual win equity versus projected ownership
  • Look at recent Strokes Gained data, especially approach play and tee-to-green

When comparing two players with similar odds, it makes sense to entertain the golfer that will be less popular. Of course, there’s a risk/reward decision factored into that, and it largely depends on your pool size and scoring (as we covered in previous sections).

However, being aware of pick popularity to find smart leverage situations will, over time, put you in a position to win more often.

How To Find Smart Leverage Picks

Throughout this article, we’ve outlined how to get a leg up in your Masters pool—and it all comes down to finding smart contrarian picks that fit your pool’s size and scoring system. But here’s the big question:

  • How do you actually know which golfers will be popular or underrated?

You can start by making informed assumptions using the criteria we shared in Tip #2—looking at betting odds, recent form, and course history to identify likely chalk. From there, scan for similarly strong golfers who might be overlooked.

However, there is an easier, more precise way to do that.
