In the final PGA Tour event before the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, Sedgefield Country Club once again hosts the Wyndham Championship. Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, Sedgefield has been a regular stop on the PGA Tour schedule since 2008. Originally designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1926, it is one of the finest surviving examples of his work from golf’s Golden Age. A series of restorations over the past two decades has carefully preserved Ross’s original vision while ensuring the course remains relevant for today’s professionals.
Sedgefield presents a strategic challenge that is increasingly rare on the modern PGA Tour. At just over 7,100 yards, it places a premium on precision rather than power, rewarding players who consistently position the ball in the proper sections of its contoured fairways. Although winning scores have routinely pushed well into double digits under par, the narrow tree-lined corridors, thoughtfully placed bunkers, and elevated Ross green complexes demand disciplined course management and precise execution throughout the week.
Length off the tee offers only a limited advantage at Sedgefield, and many of the Tour’s longest hitters often skip the event altogether. Instead, the course consistently favors accurate drivers who excel with short and mid irons, control their wedge distances, and capitalize on Bermuda greens. That formula is reflected in its recent champions, as Aaron Rai, Lucas Glover, Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, J.T. Poston, and Webb Simpson have all relied on elite ball placement, sharp approach play, and dependable putting rather than overwhelming power to lift the trophy.
The Field
The Wyndham Championship annually attracts one of the most unique fields on the PGA Tour schedule. As the final event of the regular season, it blends established stars looking to build momentum before the FedExCup Playoffs with players desperately needing one final strong finish to extend their seasons. It currently features 16 of the top 50 players in the world rankings. The field is highlighted by defending champion Cameron Young, along with Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Ben Griffin, Aaron Rai, Jackson Koivun, Keegan Bradley, Ryan Gerard, and a host of proven PGA Tour winners and Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup veterans.
The biggest storyline, however, centers around the FedExCup Playoff bubble. Only the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings after this week will qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, making the Wyndham Championship one of the most pressure-packed tournaments of the year. Players comfortably inside the number are competing for improved playoff positioning and potential advantages deeper into the postseason, while those hovering around the cutoff know that every birdie, bogey, and finish can determine whether their season continues or comes to an abrupt end.
