Texas native Ryan Palmer shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 during the second round of the Valero Texas Open to take a two-shot lead over Matt Kuchar, Dylan Frittelli and Kevin Chappell. The wily veteran has been struggling of late with three missed cuts in his last four events, including a total of 24.6 strokes lost to the field during that stretch. Palmer has seen his fortunes turn over the first two rounds gaining over 3.2 strokes both with his ball-striking and putting. While many of the afternoon golfers struggled with the windier and firmer conditions, Palmer stayed consistent throughout. Most of the pre-tournament favorites missed the cut including Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. Hideki Matsuyama withdrew during his round with a neck injury that continues to bother him.
There are slightly gusty conditions forecast early for Saturday’s round, but no distinct wave advantages as winds look to be light throughout the day.
