Russell Knox caught fire on the back nine at TPC San Antonio and shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Valero Texas Open. 21-year old Rasmus Hogjaard, one of Europe’s best young talents, had the lead at 8-under until scoring a double-bogey on his final hole to trail Knox by one shot. A quartet of players sit two shots back including Matt Kuchar, Denny McCarthy, J.J. Spaun and Aaron Rai. 17 players are within three shots of the lead and 16 of them are not yet eligible for next week’s Masters. A win this week would clinch a ticket and is a definite motivation for all involved.
While wind gusts appear constant throughout Friday’s second round, the early morning winds between 7-10 a.m. are forecast to be calmer than those the afternoon wave will experience. The greens here at the Oaks course are known to firm up throughout the day and increased wind will only add to how tough they might become. For Showdown lineups, it appears wise to target a majority of the golfers in the early wave.
