Following Collin Morikawa‘s impressive performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the PGA Tour continues down the California coast for the Genesis Invitational, the second consecutive Signature Event and the final stop of the West Coast Swing.
After last year’s devastating wildfires prompted a one-year relocation to Torrey Pines Golf Course, the tournament returns to the Los Angeles area and the historic Riviera Country Club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Designed by George C. Thomas Jr. and opened in 1926 as the Los Angeles Athletic Club Golf Course, it has been a staple on the PGA Tour since 1973.
The best way to watch the world’s best golfers navigate Riviera Country Club is with our new in-tournament leaderboard, which tracks 45+ metrics live per round!
Eighteen of the world’s top 20 are in the 72-player field, along with 41 of the world’s top 50. And unlike last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am, there is a 36-hole cut with the top 50 and ties, plus any player within 10 shots of the lead, able to play the weekend.
Since its opening, Riviera Country Club has been a pillar of American tournament golf and is the annual venue for the Genesis Invitational. This event, originally known as the Los Angeles Open, was first played at Riviera in 1929. Since 1973, the Los Angeles Open has been held here every year, except 1983 and 1988. Riviera is known as one of Ben Hogan‘s favorite courses and is often referred to as “Hogan’s Alley.”
The course has hosted several major championships, including the 1948 U.S. Open, the PGA Championships in 1983 and 1995, the 1998 U.S. Senior Open Championship, and the 2017 U.S. Amateur. Additionally, Riviera is set to host the Summer Olympics in 2028.
Overall, the course has remained largely unchanged since its inception. It has stood the test of time, having undergone only one major renovation in 1992 when Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore redesigned the bunkers to resemble their original appearance. In 2008, Tom Fazio completed a minor restoration of the 7th and 8th holes.
