Billy Horschel chipped in for birdie on his opening hole of Saturday’s round and it was all downhill from there as he had his second consecutive bogey-free round. Finishing with a 7-under 65, he takes a five-shot lead over Cameron Smith and Aaron Wise into the final round. Horschel has been superbly consistent in every area of his game, gaining 7.6 strokes both ball-striking and with this short game. Speaking on his mindset going into tomorrow’s final round he said, “I just go to the tee understanding I’m leading the tournament. I know I’ve got however many shots I have ahead. I’m not going to be protective, I’m not going to be overly aggressive. I’m going to play the way I have the last three days. We’re going to hit the golf shots that are required, and I know if we do that it’s going to give me the best chance to be victorious come tomorrow.”
With his lead so huge, and because he is an established 7-time winner, he enters Sunday as a huge -190 favorite. He is also gaining strokes in 63% of his last 24 Sunday rounds. With his bulldog mentality, he is not the type of player to collapse like so many others we have seen in recent Sunday memory.
