27-year-old PGA Tour rookie Mito Pereira weathered a bogey stretch along with cool and windy conditions to shoot a 1-under 69 and take a three-shot lead going into the final round of the PGA Championship. It was an up-and-down round for Pereira who steadied himself with three birdies over the last six holes. Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick are tied for second at 6-under, while Cameron Young (-5) and Abraham Ancer (-4) round out the top five.
If Pereira hangs on for the win he would be the first rookie to win a major since Keegan Bradley won the 2011 PGA Championship. With a consistent northerly wind and temperatures in the 50s, numerous “big-name” performers faltered on Saturday. Both Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, who were in the mix heading into the round, each shot 74.
Sunday conditions appear to be very similar with winds from Northeast at 12-15 mph and slightly warmer temperatures in the 6os. With outrights in hand on Fitzpatrick, Young, and Thomas, I’m not looking to add anyone. Pereira has been a very consistent Sunday performer in the early part of his career. Of course, the pressure he will face on Sunday will be like nothing he has experienced before. Personally, I think Matt Fitzpatrick (+350 odds) comes up clutch and wins the 104th Wanamaker Trophy.
